How To Make Your Color Treated Hair Look And Feel Amazing

Have you ever tried to dye your hair at home and it went terribly wrong?

Maybe the color didn’t turn out the way you expected, or your hair was severely damaged during the process.

You may be wondering, “how do I keep my color-treated hair healthy?

Although it is a common practice to experiment and use a box dye to switch up your hair color at home, a color treatment is a serious chemical process that can have a drastic and very permanent effect on your hair.

In this article I will share 6 tips on how to make your color treated hair look and feel amazing.

#1)  Consult a Professional

Hair dye is both an art and a science. You should allow a licensed professional with adequate experience to apply your hair color.

Going to a salon to receive your color treatment will usually give you better results than a DIY at home job.

#2) Follow the Rules

There are certain rules to color treated hair that you have to follow if you want to maintain your hair’s health.

If you’ve recently done a jet black rinse, don’t try to go over it with a bleach blonde a few months afterwards. Don’t relax and color your hair on the same day. Don’t wash your hair with scalding hot water.

You can maintain the health and vibrancy of your hair if you understand the biggest “hair color no-no’s” and avoid them at all costs.

#3) Keep it Moisturized

If you want to make your color treated hair look and feel amazing, it’s important to use the right shampoos and conditioners.

Your shampoo should be moisturizing, not strengthening, and should contain natural ingredients and humectants to keep your hair soft and moist. This will help prevent breakage and will help keep your color from fading.

You should deep condition your dyed hair on a regular basis, usually weekly. This could mean visiting the salon often for high quality treatments, or using salon quality products at home.

#4) Keep it Strong

Many stylists do a bond reparative treatment after coloring their client’s hair to keep it healthy and strong.

Be sure to alternate between moisturizing and restorative treatments based on your hair’s needs. If your hair feels dry and brittle, then it needs more moisture. If your hair feels weak and gummy, then it may need more protein.

But be careful not to overdo it. Color treated hair is fragile. Too much protein can leave it feeling like straw and can lead to severe breakage. As a general rule, try to limit your use of strengthening treatments to once a month.

#5) Trim Your Ends Regularly

Color treated hair is more susceptible to breakage and damage. Trimming your ends will prevent your hair from splitting up the shaft, which will lead to a lot of your hair needing to be cut. Remember, your hair only grows about 1/2 inch per month.

Typically, you should trim about ¼ an inch of hair every 4-6 weeks, if needed. If you are trying to grow your hair and your ends are not badly split, you may be able to get away with trimming less frequently. Some people get great results by trimming their hair every 3-6 months.

One thing is certain–you cannot skip trims if you want your color treated hair to look good. Raggedy, split ends will take away from the beauty of your color.
