His documentary changed a lot of what we know about fast food today. With many massive documentaries under his belt, many people might be wondering how Morgan Spurlock died.

Spurlock catapulted into fame after he made his Academy Award-nominated film Super Size Me. The film followed Spurlock on his 30-day journey of only eating McDonald’s Super Sized meals. He gained 25 pounds, had depression and liver dysfunction, saw a spike in his cholesterol, and lost his sex drive during the process. The documentary shed light on the psychological and physical effects of fast food in the USA.

“Everything’s bigger in America,” he said in the film. “We’ve got the biggest cars, the biggest houses, the biggest companies, the biggest food, and finally: the biggest people.”  The film grossed more than $22 million on a $65,000 budget.

Spurlock also directed the documentaries Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden? (2008), POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold (2011), Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope (2011), One Direction: This Is Us. He also had made a sequel of his famous documentary with Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken in 2017 which documented the chicken farmers involved in the fast food industry.

How did Morgan Spurlock die?

Morgan Spurlock died due to complications of cancer. His family confirmed his death to The Associated Press.

“It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan,” says his brother Craig Spurlock, who worked with him on several projects. “Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas and generosity. Today the world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”  Morgan Spurlock is survived by his sons Laken and Kallen, his parents, Phyllis and Ben; brothers Craig and Barry, and former spouses Alexandra Jamieson and Sara Bernstein.

The documentarian opened up about his alcoholism. Spurlock told ABC News about his sobriety journey, “I wished I’d done it 10 years ago.”

Spurlock founded the production company Warrior Poets after the success of Super Size Me. In 2017, Spurlock stepped down as CEO of the company amid the #MeToo Movement. In a blog post, he confessed that he was accused of rape while in college and had settled a sexual harassment case with a female assistant. He also admitted that he cheated on both of his wives multiple times while he was in a relationship with them.

“The worst part is, I’m someone who consistently hurts those closest to me. From my wife, to my friends, to my family, to my partners & co-workers. I have helped create a world of disrespect through my own actions,” he wrote. “By recognizing and openly admitting what I’ve done to further this terrible situation, I hope to empower the change within myself.”
