Patrick Ta Hydra-Luxe Luminous Foundation Review: Light, Silky Coverage

Cosmetic innovator Patrick Ta has done it again. On the heels of his namesake beauty label’s Major Glow Crème & Powder Highlighter Duo release in June, the glam genius has blessed us with another new product: Major Skin Hydra-Luxe Luminous Skin Perfecting Foundation—and we couldn’t be more thankful. As the name suggests, the foundation aims to provide light, silky coverage with the goal of making your skin look like your skin, but slightly better.

When it comes to product development, Ta is intentional and considerate. He creates products with all skin types and tones in mind, and Major Skin Hydra-Luxe was no different. “When I was formulating this, it was really important for me that this foundation mixed well on clean skin, and that it mixed well with other products,” Ta said of the launch. “That’s the biggest thing I really wanted in this product. Because as a makeup artist, you want everything on your skin to just blend seamlessly together. The contour, the concealer, the blush, the powder…this foundation is every other product’s best friend. I think what’s really special about this foundation is that there’s no mica or pearl in this formula, the glow you’re going to get is from the ingredients in this bottle.”

So, let’s talk about ingredients. Every bottle is packed with hydrating elements like squalane, hyaluronic acid as well as shea butter and hydrogenated olive oil — creating a creamy, serum-like feel. When it comes to range, the foundation comes in 30 different shades, starting with 1 Golden and ending with 30 Rich Neutral. (Beauty TikToker @Golloria—who has garnered a reputation for rightfully calling out popular cosmetic companies for their lack of inclusivity—already gave the product her stamp of approval earlier this month, gushing, “Patrick Ta, come to the front. This foundation is beautiful. It’s literally beautiful.)

Of course, StyleCaster editors had to also experience the glow, and it’s safe to say, in Patrick Ta we trust. Read our thoughts down below.

“Over the years, I’ve become less of a foundation girlie. I prefer to wear blush and bronzer over SPF, calling it a day after I apply mascara and gloss, so when I read the breakdown of Major Skin-Hydra Luxe, I was immediately intrigued. On my skin, it felt light and velvety, spreading nicely on my face without having to do too much blending. I still looked like myself, just a bit more hydrated and dewy. It reminded me of the Paris Instagram filter, but a bit toned down. My complexion appeared even, but my tiny freckles were still visible, which I loved.” — Robyn Merrett, Style & Beauty Editor

6 Neutral

“I’m in my ‘less is more era’ with makeup, and this foundation is definitely going to be the one I reach for from now on. It evened out my skin tone beautifully while subduing any redness (as you can see in my before and after photo) yet still let my freckles show through. If you prefer fuller coverage, you can also layer it without any issues. As an added bonus, it wears pretty well throughout the day—even after walking around in 90 degree weather, it still looked fully intact.” — Maya Gandara, Commerce Editor

14 Golden

“I really liked how nicely this foundation spreads. It has a slightly tacky texture that lends to really nice and easy blending. It also dries really nicely and quickly. I tested the shade Golden, and I found it to be a really good match for me. I prefer less foundation to let some redness through and to make my skin look like skin, but it’s a very easily buildable foundation.” — Aamina Khan, Fashion Writer
