Steve McNair, a former NFL quarterback, was killed on July 4, 2009 in a murder-suicide. His death left his wife Mechelle to pick up the pieces, as well as reconcile with her husband’s infidelity, and now, she dedicates her life to a very important cause.

He was a beloved figure in the NFL, particularly known for his time with the Tennessee Titans, where he led the team to Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000. The investigation into McNari’s death concluded that he was murdered by Sahel “Jenni” Kazemi, a 20-year-old woman he had been romantically involved with. After shooting McNair, Kazemi turned the gun on herself.
“It was emotional [when Steve died], but it was never hard for me to talk about him because of the person that he was,” Mechelle told the Titans Online in 2016. “Steve’s death was indeed tragic, but I look at the dad and husband that he was, the player people respected and admired so much, the generous man that he was.”

“There is literally not a day that goes by that we don’t talk about their dad,” Mechelle continued to Titans Online. “The boys do things that remind me of Steve all the time. I’m always like, ‘Oh my gosh, your dad used to do that.’ And then they’ll ask me what he did and I’ll tell them another story about him.”
What was Mechelle and Steve’s relationship like before his death?
The couple married in 1997. They met while Mechelle was a student at Alcorn State University, where Steve was a star quarterback. They were married for 12 years, and Mechelle maintains she had no idea her husband was having an affair until after he died.
“I didn’t know about her at all,” Mechelle told ESPN in 2018. “You’re going to have people who say, ‘Oh, she knew.’ Did I know about some other people and some other things? Yes. But did I know about her? No, I did not.”
